A Family Displaced by Tragedy
Bashemeire Jovanice, a 75-year-old widow, has weathered storms that would break many spirits. Following her husband's death, she faced the cruel reality of being denied rightful family properties by relatives—leaving her and her family without a place to call home.
With nine family members including her four children and several grandchildren, Bashemeire's family found themselves moving from place to place, with uncertainty shadowing their every step. Each day became a struggle for survival, with little hope for what tomorrow might bring.
The First Step Towards Stability
During our pastoral outreach work, our team encountered Bashemeire's family in their moment of desperate need. Moved by their plight, we mobilised our church community in a beautiful demonstration of neighbour helping neighbour. Together, our local congregation pooled resources and efforts to construct a mud house for the family—providing them with their first stable shelter after years of displacement.
This initial intervention has given the family something precious beyond physical shelter: a sense of belonging and the knowledge that they are not forgotten.
Challenges That Remain
While having a roof over their heads has brought tremendous relief, Bashemeire's family continues to face significant hurdles. The most pressing concern is education for the four children in her care. Currently:
- Two children attend high school, each requiring £80 per term in school fees
- Two younger children are in primary school, each needing £32 per term
These educational expenses, totalling approximately £224 per term, remain well beyond the family's means. Without assistance, these children risk losing their opportunity for education—the very pathway that could help break the cycle of vulnerability for this family.
